God never intended for you to have a prayer life. 

“Prayer lives”... are a human invention. 

A human attempt to put God in a box. 

To confine him. 

To tame him. 

To make him more convenient. 

To separate heaven from earth. 

Here’s what I mean…

… you and I have been taught to think of our lives, as being separated into distinct compartments: we have our “work life” and “family life” and “church life” and “prayer life” — and ne’er the four shall meet.

But the problem this creates is?

Even if you manage to pray for 20 minutes in the morning (which, let's be real, is a struggle many days) ...

... and even if you feel waves of peace and a sense of God's nearness rolling through you as you pray... 

... once it's over, it's over. 

The alarm goes off, you jump from your chair, you grab your lunch, you stumble out the door, you put the car in reverse, you zoom down the street... 

... and by the time you are on the freeway it feels like you are in another world.

Gone are the green pastures and quiet waters that filled your soul with fresh air 20 minutes ago. 

And in their place, is a jumbled list of phone calls to make and emails to send and fires to put out, all drenched in a thick coat of anxiety.

You pressed 'pause' on your prayer life; 

You pressed 'play' on your real life.

 But What If… 

… you opened a door, stepped through, and found yourself inside a life where you were praying not just 20 minutes per day… but literally all the time? 

What if as you...

• Drove to work
• Shopped at Walmart
• Responded to emails
• Took the kids to soccer
• Did your taxes
• Tossed the Caesar salad

Practical Strategies For Migrating From A “Prayer Life” To A “Praying Life”

One random day in November 2020 I was in my room praying... and God told me out of the blue to quit my well-paying, fully-remote job that I was (pretty) happy with. 

He didn't tell me why at first... but over the next few months it became clear that He wanted me to start writing daily emails about how any "normal" Christian with a crazy life... can take Paul at his word, at a very practical and granular level... and learn to "pray without ceasing." (from 1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Funny thing was? 

I didn't actually know how to "pray without ceasing"... yet. I had read several books about it (the classics: Practice of the Presence of God, Letters By A Modern Mystic, Way of A Pilgrim, etc.) I had made several attempts in years past to "pray every minute of every day" myself. But I could not honestly say I was successfully living in this way of "continuous prayer." 

So I decided...

"I am going to learn how to keep praying during every minute of every day... and refuse to stop until I am literally doing that... and write about the journey" 

... and then I turned my life into one big experiment, with the goal of learning to how fill every minute of every day with joyous, Spirit-filled, life-giving, empowering, conversational prayer, and I started sending emails every Monday through Friday about my experiment. 

So that other Christians could learn the lessons I was learning. And begin to exit THEIR prayer lives... and step into a life in which THEY were always praying. 

I am still in the middle of the experiment.

If you DO decide to start searching for a life where you are praying literally every minute of every day... and if you ask God for help... and refuse to give up... it's only a matter of time before you ARE praying all the time. 

Why am I so sure?

Because it is God's Will - his deepest desire for you - that you arrive in a life where you are always praying, and so (assuming you ask him for help) *HE* will make sure you arrive at your goal.

How do I know "it is God's Will for you to enter a life where you are always praying"?  

Because Paul literally says it -- here's the passage I'm talking about:

"Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

So my parting word is?

Go for it.
